The dark night gathered its forces.. mental-- physical-- emotional. Sam didn't have any resources to fight it, didn't have any place to go, or any friend. None left alive at all.
This was a pretty lonely condition to be in, you would have to assume. Having no one. But Sam realistically blamed himself. To have friends you have to trust somebody, sometime, and Sam did not like trusting anyone at ANY time. Not anymore.
